Uniforms take away who children are in school. We dress how we all feel as individuals. The school board has taken to much from us already.

I hate this policy….I thought this was America?
I agree with Coral, it takes away our RIGHTS of free speech as individuals!! I actually had to write a paper on freedom of speech this year, and I got a pretty good grade on it. How ironic…WHAT’s WRONG WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD?!?!!? THEY’RE TURNING US INTO ROBOTS!!!!!! I mean, even adults are going to get tired of everyone looking bored, identical, and boring. I don’t care if we have different colored tops, we’re still all going to look the same.
Don’t like the uniform policy?
What have YOU done about it? Organized and unified?Have you contacted School Board members and the Superintendent of Schools yet?
What are YOU going to do about it, starting now? Support/elect School Board candidates who are opposed to uniforms? Are you prepared to oppose uniforms and defend your position in a logical, mature and professional manner, supported by facts?
What are YOU willing to do about it – are you committed? Uniform policy non-compliance and civil disobedience can be powerful in MASS but most assuredly, will have consequences (i.e., school-imposed disciplinary actions). Are you willing to face and accept any consequences? For students, parental/guardian attitudes (and potential consequences) should be an extremely important consideration.
Frankly, “whining” is useless. It will take far more than “I don’t like it…”, “It’s not fair…”, “I have rights…”, etc. to rescind the uniform policy. Facebook, Twitter, etc. are great “tools”, but in and of themselves,they won’t make an appreciable difference.
Nothing is going to change “over night”: opposition must be consistent, factual, non-violent, peaceful, persistent, passionate, patient, rational, visable and voluminous.
Do you expect for someone else to “fight the battle” for you? If you’re sincerely opposed, YOU must “join the battle”. If you’re not part of the solution, then you’re only a part of the problem.
You may fail, you may succeed. Either way, you will have tried.

Uniforms are stifling students’ creativity, making the economy worse, and a big waste of time and money. I’ve noticed the tendency for this in the Alachua County, even though I’m only twelve years old.
For example: on Newberry Road in the past few years, a lot of money was wasted on putting little bumps on the sides of the roads so that drivers didn’t cross over to the ‘bike lane’. I didn’t find this effective at all, instead, finding it annoying every time a huge truck came by and my mom had to swerve over to avoid being hit on a wet, moist day! A complete, utter, and ANNOYINg waste of money.
Uniforms are much the same. People will find other ways to express themselves. Maybe they’ll write provocative things on their exposed skin. Maybe they’ll act more rowdy in class to show what they are. When I wear clothes, I wear them to show what I’m feeling, my taste in apparel, and to show off what I’ve got.
In this economy, people can’t AFFORD to spend extra pennies that were originally going into their children’s college funds and use them to buy expensive polos. Oh, joy! Extra money spent buying the gas to go to the mall and purchasing the clothes.
Also, what about other stores? Not every store like Dillard’s or Macy’s sells affordable polos. Parents won’t want to buy twenty or thirty pairs of clothes; maybe only a few will do. The stores will lose money, people will be fired and lose jobs, and how will they support their families?
In my opinion, the school board would be better off improving the standards for the FCAT than wasting their time having a big debate about uniforms, in which the end involves a population of mostly unhappy kids and parents and employees.

much this outfit costs and that oufit costs. This

To All Uniform Opponents,
In a recent post to “School Uniforms” in Gville Sun forum, a uniform opponent, “Mikescary”, wrote horrendous, personal insults toward uniform proponents. Not good, not good at all. Made ALL uniform opponents look bad.
It is important uniform opponents voice their concerns, however, concerns need to be expressed clearly, logically and respectfully. Otherwise, the proponents and undecided will seriously discount the opposition’s opinions.
Please, if you’re opposed, let everyone know – but please be smart about it.
The Constitution clearly states that people have the right to say what they want. Other people may not like it but they have to allow anyone who wants to speak publicly speak. The school board let people speak 1 day but did not take their opinions into consideration.
I am totally against “dress codes” as is everyone else. They say the whole reason they are doing uniforms is because people aren’t following the dresscode! Well you know what! The truth is that teachers aren’t doing their part! The whole reason 10% of people break the dress code is because they know they can get away with it. Not even the deans and principles do anything. I break the dress code before. That doesnt mean im a bad person, in fact i go to a good kid school and i am a little goody two shoo. But i were short shorts almost everyday and everyday i walk right under the deans nose and say hello. By putting this new dress code in place you are punishing the students for the teachers faults! All this dress code is doing is get people mad and turn thousands of people against the school board! What is the good in that! We are teens and we want a say in our lives! How is it right that peopl we dont even know have power over us!

FACTS from “Discipline Data for Alachua County” (source: SBAC Office of the Staff Attorney):
– During the 2009-2010 school year, 706 students received referrals for dress code violation. School district population 27,572 students. Dress code violation rate 2.6%.
– Over a 3 year period (2007-08 through 2009-10), referrals declined each year, in each of the following discipline categories: battery, fighting, threats/intimidation and weapons (weapons 20 students in 2009-10) – without mandatory school uniforms.
Other FACTS:
– for the second year consecutively, St Johns county schools ranked first in the state with the highest overall school results based on grades recently released by the FL Dept of Education. The St Johns school district has never had school uniforms.
– none of the school districts immediately surroundinng Alachua County will have district-wide school uniforms for all grades in 2010-11.
– In the past, Hillsborough and Polk counties adopted school uniforms. Now, both counties have no uniforms in their high schools. Hillsborough County also doesn’t have uniforms in its middle schools.
– in Alachua County, its professional high school administrators in unison advised the School Board NOT to adopt mandatory school uniforms.
School uniforms are “necessary” in Alachua County? Pure nonsense, an arbitrary and poorly designed/written policy unjustifiably imposed on Alachua County’s students/families, placing unnecessary restrictions on students’ attire and interfering with parenting without just cause.
